Lopes has exhibited extensively, with more than 45 solo exhibitions in Australia, London, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

Steve Lopes is a Sydney-based painter known for his figurative landscapes. His work considers and reflects on our age of complexity, volatility and crisis through thematic narratives of migration and place, the body on the land and the land without the body. An inveterate traveller since his youth, his curiosity for new experiences drives his art and desire to tell stories, connecting the threads of history and place with the people who have shaped them. He has studied at London Print Studio (1997), the Art Students League of New York (1992) and the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales (1989–91).

He lived for a number of years in London and since 1996, Lopes has exhibited extensively, with more than 45 solo exhibitions in Australia, London, Hong Kong and New Zealand. His selected curated exhibitions include Fiumano Fine Art, London, Mall Galleries London, Nock Art Gallery, Hong Kong; Waiheke Regional Gallery, Auckland; Pataka Regional Gallery, New Zealand; Art Gallery of NSW Australia; ANU Drill Hall, Canberra; Orange Regional Gallery NSW; and S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney.  His work is held in public collections including those of the National Gallery of Australia
